Modern Shingle-Style Addition: Expanding an 1870’s Historic Home in Hingham.
Thaxter Street Residence
The Thaxter Street Residence represents a sophisticated expansion of an 1870’s home located near the prestigious Lincoln Historic District in Hingham, Massachusetts. The project’s primary objective was to replace a dated, single-story attached garage with a substantial two-story modern shingle-style addition, significantly increasing the home's program while respecting its historical context.
The architectural design utilizes a modern interpretation of the Shingle Style to create a seamless transition between the mid-19th-century original structure and the new construction. Completed in Fall 2025 by LDS Construction, the addition provides expansive new living areas that bridge the gap between historic charm and contemporary functionality.
Given the scale of the expansion, the project was classified as a "large addition" under the current Massachusetts Energy Code. This designation required a rigorous commitment to high-performance building standards, ensuring that the new structure meets modern efficiency and sustainability requirements without compromising the aesthetic integrity of the original home and neighborhood. The result is a high-performing, resilient residence that honors Hingham’s architectural heritage while delivering a premier modern living experience.
