Carriage Lane Residence

An underutilized attic transformed.

Carriage Lane Residence

A bedroom with a wooden bed frame, white bedding, gray and striped pillows, a nightstand with a lamp, books, and small decor, a potted plant, hardwood floors, and two windows showing green trees outside.

One of the most requested renovation projects in the northeast is probably the conversion of an unfinished attic. Many homes throughout the region have large empty spaces under the roof that homeowners would like to use. In general, we support the use of any underutilized space before proceeding with a costly addition, however, not all attics are created equal. Many simply are not feasible to finish for various reasons and often the remaining ‘usable area’ is not as big as it appeared.

Fortunately, this home checked all of the boxes for code compliance but still required a substantial amount of structural and envelope upgrades to complete. In the end, we were able to help the homeowner add a primary bedroom suite to the home with a generous pass-thru-style walk-in-closet, and a primary bathroom.
